November 28, 2011 - Avnet New Jersey Office Awarded LEED Certification

PHOENIX -- Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a leading global technology distributor, today announced that it achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its branch office in Marlton, N.J.

This marks Avnet's second facility within the company that meets the LEED certification standard, and builds upon Avnet's legacy of sustainable business practices from how it operates its data centers to its commitment to reducing the company's global carbon footprint. Notably, IDG's Computerworld recently named Avnet one of the top 12 green-IT organizations in the U.S. for its use of technology to reduce energy consumption.

Avnet first reached Gold level certification standards in January 2010 for its branch location in Madison, Ala. An Avnet facility in North Reading, Mass. is currently in the process of achieving LEED Certified level certification. As part of Avnet's commitment to sustainability, it was decided to relocate the New Jersey office to a new 17,000-square-foot space where the company made it a point to incorporate green design.

The new space received 45 points on a scale of 40-49 points for the Certified category. Avnet was able to achieve this level of certification in part by recycling 77 percent of construction and demolition debris from being dumped in a landfill or incinerator. The new office also received high marks for offsetting 50 percent electricity consumption with renewable energy.

Other notable achievements include:

  • Low-flow fixtures, which contribute to 32 percent water savings
  • 18 percent reduction in lighting power
  • 30 percent of building material and furniture contain high levels of recycled content
  • The use of materials with low-emitting volatile organic compounds, which reduces the amount of indoor air contaminants

"As Avnet continues to grow, we make it a point to promote environmental stewardship and create healthy work environments for our employees," said Bob Gracz, vice president and director of corporate real estate for Avnet. "This achievement is a testament to our commitment to green initiatives and our ongoing efforts to reduce Avnet's impact on the world."

LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.
